When The Side Hustle Becomes The Main Hustle

I pressed pause on my freelance business last Autumn. I had recently parted company with a couple of clients and I realised with a slightly heavy heart that I didn’t really want to look for new ones since I wasn’t making enough money after childcare to make it worthwhile.

I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and I love social media. I thought freelance social media management was going to tick all my boxes. But trying to authentically represent and build someone else’s brand and be on call around the clock, whilst also in a constant race to the bottom on price was not the empowering and fulfilling career choice I thought it was going to be.

I knew there had to be a better use of my skills. And I also knew that the only brand I really wanted to represent and grow online, was my own.

If you follow me on Instagram you’ll have probably have seen that whilst on hiatus from freelancing, I decided to tackle my anxiety, overly emotional relationship with food, seriously out-of-shape-and-rapidly-approaching-40 body head on, by getting fit.

It seemed like a good project to give me something to document on social media initially just for fun but it quickly gained momentum and my inbox started to fill with messages from others saying I’d inspired them and that they wanted to start too. My fitness progress surpassed expectations of what I ever thought I could achieve within the first four months and it was all down to this brand’s magic formula of fitness and nutrition with the added layer of one to one motivation and support. Which is definitely where the magic happens, at least it was for me.

Everything that I have ever written about on here – ethical fashion, beauty, wellbeing, parenting …those things are all still very much part of who I am. But discovering fitness has ignited a fire in me that I have never really felt before. A sense of wellbeing so strong and pure that I wish I wasn’t just discovering it now, in the last months of my thirties.

And just like that, a project turned into a passion, into a side hustle and now into a real business. I’m still pinching myself that sharing my authentic journey online and helping to bring this magic into other people’s lives has become what I do. It’s an honour and a privilege.
